Intertextuality

Intertextuality is when music videos use referrenced texts such as tv shows or movies. This is done because hets recogniton from the audience. John stewart said there was a visual reference to cinema, fashion and photography. He says the music videos are incorprating, raiding and constructing.

Here is an example:

Taylor Swift - Love Story

This music video is based on Romeo and Juliet as it follows the same story line. This is referrencing to another existing text therefore we can say this is an example of intertextuality. The lyrics are also linked to the play. Lyrics such as "Daddy said stay away from Juliet" emphasise this. The outfits also look very archaic which is similar to the outfits in the 19568 romeo and juleit film.

music videos in relation to voyeurism

Anaconda - Nicki Minaj

One of the first shots of the video shows women wearing very little clothing and there bare legs are showing. Throughtout the whole music video, about 90% of the shots are women in very little clothing which shows cleavlege, and there arses are very explicit. This has been done to atrract attention from the males watching. Some are wearing crop tops which is one of the main reasons why this is aimed at males. Most of the time the women in the video are twerking or doing some other arse movement which I also think provokes the males to gaze. I think it is very sexual when we see her pouring cream on her breast and when she is dancing around drake. To show that she is dancing very sexually the director used a long shot which also makes sure that the male viewer can the best view of her arse. I would like to highlight what drake is acting like, he always has his eyes on her and it seems that he is taking pleasure at what she is doing.  This sums up the male attitude towards women when a female dances like this. It is very obvious also that when Nicki Minaj bends down and all Drake can see is her arse this gives further evidence to suggest that this is aimed towards males. 37 seconds through the video there is a long shot that makes sure that the viewer can see her whole body espeically the arse. This is purposely done to engage the male viewer. There is jump cutting on 22 seconds to have a close up of the arse which engages the mail viewer.

Close-up of the arse to attract male viewer.

She Makes Me Wanna - JLS

The first shot of this video is a shot of guy with his top off which reveals his abs. This therefore shows you that this video is primarily aimed at the female audience. I think this is the only real reason why they have him topless. In all of the scenes that Ashton is in he is either wearing a tank top which reveals his chest, which will also want to make the female gaze,  or he is topless. Therefore he he has a sexual image that femal viewers will want to look at. Throughtout the video it keeps cutting to one of the group on a rock topless. I think the editor is doing this to grab the attention of the viewer all the time throughout the video and make her watch the whole way through. There are mid and long shots to show the whole body. They have shown his whole body because they know females will gaze at this.
